Game Preview: UCF vs. North Carolina

September 16, 2025 ⟡ The Wild Knight

Saturday, September 20, 2025 | 3:30 PM ET | FOX | Acrisure Bounce House, Orlando

After years of cancelled attempts, the UCF Knights and North Carolina Tar Heels will finally meet on the gridiron this Saturday afternoon in what promises to be one of the most intriguing matchups of the college football weekend.

The game, airing on FOX at 3:30 PM, marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs despite multiple previous scheduling attempts.

A Meeting Finally Realized

The backstory of this matchup involves some unfortunate timing. UCF and UNC have tried to play each other twice before, only to see both games cancelled by circumstances beyond their control.

In 2018, Hurricane Florence forced the cancellation of UCF’s planned visit to Chapel Hill, while the 2020 matchup fell victim to COVID-19 pandemic disruptions. Now these programs finally get their opportunity to face off.

Tale of Two Different Trajectories

UCF (2-0) – The Resurgent Knights

The Knights enter this contest riding high under the return of head coach Scott Frost, who has brought immediate stability back to Orlando.

UCF opened with a hard-fought 17-10 victory over Jacksonville State before exploding for 68 points against North Carolina A&T in Week 2.

That dominant performance saw the Knights rush for an eye-popping 356 yards on just 32 carries – an average of 11.1 yards per attempt.

Frost’s second stint in Orlando has generated significant buzz. His first tenure from 2016-2017 transformed UCF into a powerhouse, culminating in an undefeated 2017 season that many argued deserved College Football Playoff consideration.

After a disappointing four-year run at Nebraska that ended with his firing in 2022, Frost is eager to recapture that magic.

The Knights’ ground game has been particularly impressive, with speedster Jaden Nixon needing just four carries to accumulate 156 yards and two touchdowns against North Carolina A&T.

Seven of UCF’s eight touchdowns in that game came via the rushing attack, showcasing the balanced offensive approach Frost has implemented.

UNC (2-1) – Belichick’s New Era

North Carolina enters under the guidance of new head coach Bill Belichick, the legendary NFL coach making his college football debut.

The Tar Heels suffered a devastating 48-14 loss to TCU in Belichick’s coaching debut, before recovering with a defensive-minded 20-3 victory over Charlotte and then a convincing 41-6 win over Richmond.

The season opener against TCU was particularly concerning, as UNC managed just 222 yards of total offense while TCU rolled up 542 yards.

Despite the lopsided victory over Richmond, quarterback play remains a significant concern for UNC. The Tar Heels may see more of backup quarterback Max Johnson, who came in for relief after starter Gio Lopez was injured in the TCU loss.

Johnson is a more accurate passer but is still recovering from a catastrophic broken leg injury he suffered in the 2024 season opener at Minnesota. The injury was so severe that Johnson initially feared he might lose his leg, requiring multiple surgeries and a year-long rehabilitation process.

On the ground, true freshman Demon June has emerged as a potential star, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries against Richmond. However, his performance was somewhat feast-or-famine, with five carries going for a yard or fewer while two explosive runs of 50 and 45 yards accounted for 64% of his yardage.

Key Storylines to Watch

Quarterback Situation While UCF has not officially named a starting quarterback, it would be shocking if Tayven Jackson doesn’t get the nod. Jackson has impressed in his opportunities, including a strong relief performance against Jacksonville State where he completed 17 of 24 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns, leading the game-winning drive.

The former Indiana transfer earned his first start against North Carolina A&T and delivered a solid performance in the blowout victory.

Cam Fancher, who began the season as the starter, has been cleared to practice but doesn’t appear ready for game action after dealing with a back injury. Even if Fancher were healthy, there remains debate about who would be the starter, as Jackson’s performances have seemingly shifted the quarterback competition in his favor.

Historical Significance This game carries extra weight for UNC beyond just being a season-defining contest. The Tar Heels have never beaten a Big 12 Conference team during the opponent’s membership in the league.

Notable losses include defeats to Baylor (2015 Russell Athletic Bowl), West Virginia (2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl), and TCU (48-14 to open the 2025 season). A victory would finally break this troubling trend.

Coaching Chess Match The matchup between Frost and Belichick adds significant intrigue. The two coaches have history dating back to Frost’s playing days with the New York Jets, when Belichick served as defensive coordinator.

Frost expects Belichick to employ his typical approach of taking away what opponents do best, requiring the Knights to be prepared for multiple defensive looks and in-game adjustments.

Offensive Line Concerns UCF will be operating without offensive line coach Shawn Clark, who suffered a medical emergency during the bye week and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

In his absence, quality control coach Alex Farah will handle the offensive line responsibilities, though the impact of losing such an experienced coach during the season cannot be understated.

What’s at Stake

For UCF, this represents their final non-conference test before diving into Big 12 play. A victory would give the Knights a 3-0 start and significant confidence heading into conference competition against teams like Kansas State and Kansas in the following weeks.

For North Carolina, this game serves as a crucial measuring stick for the Belichick era. After the humbling loss to TCU and rebounding against lesser competition, the Tar Heels need to prove they can compete with quality opponents to validate the high expectations surrounding their new coaching staff.

The off-field attention surrounding Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson has generated additional scrutiny and media coverage that the program will need to manage while focusing on football.

The Verdict

Saturday’s contest promises to deliver the excitement that two previous cancellations have denied fans, though it may unfold as more of a defensive battle than an offensive showcase.

With both teams still establishing their offensive identities and UCF dealing with coaching disruptions while UNC works through quarterback issues, expect a lower-scoring affair where execution and fewer mistakes could determine the winner.

The stage is set at the Acrisure Bounce House for what should be a memorable first meeting between these programs. UCF and UNC will finally settle matters on the field in what could be a season-defining moment for both teams – and a crucial test of whether either program can establish the consistent offensive identity they’re both still seeking.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on FOX.
