Cincinnati, Ohio – The UCF Knights’ struggles in Big 12 play continued Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Cincinnati Bearcats 20-11 at Nippert Stadium, marking their third consecutive loss and dropping their conference record to 0-3.
Game Summary
The Knights entered the game as 10.5-point underdogs against a Cincinnati team riding high on a four-game winning streak, including an impressive upset victory over then-No. 14 Iowa State the previous week. Despite dominating the stat sheet, UCF was unable to translate that advantage into points in a frustrating defeat.
UCF actually outgained Cincinnati in total yards (413-378), ran more plays (90), and controlled time of possession (39:44). But penalties, missed fourth-down conversions, and turnovers doomed the Knights on a day when the offense moved the ball but couldn’t finish drives.
Cincinnati improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 conference play, maintaining their position atop the conference standings. The loss marked UCF’s sixth straight Big 12 defeat dating back to last season and their ninth consecutive loss in the month of October. The Knights’ last October victory came against then-No. 20 Cincinnati on Oct. 29, 2022, a 25-20 win.
Fancher’s Solid Effort Not Enough
With Tayven Jackson sidelined due to his ongoing shoulder injury, redshirt senior quarterback Cam Fancher made his second start of the season and delivered a gutsy performance. Fancher completed 28 of 49 passes for 222 yards while also leading the team in rushing with 108 yards on the ground – his first 100-yard rushing performance since leading Marshall to victory over Arkansas State on Nov. 25, 2023.
Despite Fancher’s dual-threat production, the Knights couldn’t overcome critical mistakes at crucial moments.
Penalties and Mistakes Prove Costly
The Knights shot themselves in the foot repeatedly, committing a season-high 10 penalties that stalled drives and gave Cincinnati extended opportunities. On UCF’s second possession, a 35-yard completion from Fancher to Duane Thomas Jr. was wiped out by an ineligible receiver downfield penalty, followed immediately by a false start that backed the Knights up 20 yards. Later in the drive, Fancher connected with DJ Black for 19 yards, but Black fumbled and Cincinnati recovered.
“It’s definitely frustrating,” said Fancher. “You have drives going and it’s mistakes you make on your side of the ball that we can control: pre-snap penalties and false starts, those types of things. On the positive side, it’s not a talent thing. It’s things within ourselves and within the unit that we just need to clean up.”
UCF also failed to convert on two early fourth-down attempts and converted just 39% (7 of 18) on third downs, leaving points on the field throughout the contest.
Cincinnati Takes Control Early
The Bearcats scored on their first two possessions after UCF mistakes gave them short fields. After UCF turned the ball over on downs at the Cincinnati 41-yard line on the opening drive, quarterback Brendan Sorsby connected with Jeff Caldwell for a 40-yard touchdown just four plays later. It marked the first points surrendered by the Knights in the first quarter this season.
Cincinnati extended the lead to 14-0 late in the second quarter when Sorsby found Caldwell again, this time for a 9-yard score. The touchdown drive was kept alive by a controversial pass interference call on UCF cornerback DJ Bell on a critical 3rd-and-16 deep in Cincinnati territory.
“We got to keep working at it,” said head coach Scott Frost. “I’ve got to look at the tape and see, but I thought there were some the other way that we didn’t get.”
Looking Ahead
The loss drops UCF to 3-3 overall and leaves them searching for answers as the season reaches its midpoint. While the Knights have shown they can move the ball and compete with Big 12 opponents, self-inflicted wounds continue to be their undoing.
Next Saturday, UCF returns home to face West Virginia at Acrisure Bounce House Stadium with kickoff set for 1 p.m. on TNT. The Knights desperately need to clean up the penalties and capitalize on their offensive opportunities if they hope to snap this losing streak and get their season back on track.
The all-time series between UCF and Cincinnati now stands tied at 6-6, with Cincinnati having won this latest chapter. The Bearcats’ last home victory over UCF prior to this game came in 2021, the same season Cincinnati made a historic College Football Playoff appearance.
For UCF, the frustration is palpable. They’re moving the ball, they’re competing, but close doesn’t count in the win column. With bowl eligibility hanging in the balance, the Knights need to start converting their competitive efforts into victories – and fast.
