UCF vs Jacksonville State Game Recap: Knights Win 17-10

August 30, 2025 ⟡ The Wild Knight

Scott Frost’s return to the Bounce House came with all the drama you could ask for, and then some. The game stretched out over five hours thanks to a more-than-two-hour lightning delay, and it felt every second of that build-up.

From the start, the offense was borderline maddening. Both teams failed to score in the first half. UCF finally broke through by getting on the board with a 24-yard field goal from kicker Noe Ruelas midway through the third quarter. Jacksonville State answered back with one of their own shortly after.

Then came the fourth quarter. Jacksonville State struck first with a 10-yard touchdown run by Andrew Paul, grabbing a 7-3 lead. The Bounce House was suddenly on edge. But UCF responded quickly.

With about 9:30 left, backup QB Tayven Jackson, who replaced Cam Fancher after a targeting hit and the weather delay, delivered a clutch 39-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Dylan Wade to tie it up.

The defense then answered the call. JSU had one last chance: 4th-and-1 on the UCF 36 with just over 100 seconds left. Jayden Williams stuffed the runner and forced a turnover on downs.

From there, the finish turned cinematic. UCF started at its own 36 with under two minutes remaining. On 3rd-and-10, Jackson scrambled for 15 yards, and a targeting penalty tacked on another 15. A few plays later, Jackson hit DJ Black with a 33-yard touchdown with 1:03 to go. That gave the Knights a 17-10 lead.

Jacksonville State tried one final drive, but Jayden Bellamy intercepted the pass to seal the win.

Why It Matters:

  • Milestone Moment: This was UCF’s 300th program victory.
  • Frost’s Record: With the win, Frost extended his personal streak to 14 straight victories as UCF head coach. The Knights also stayed undefeated in season openers over the last decade.
  • Stats Highlights:
    • Tayven Jackson: 17-of-24 for 282 yards and two touchdowns.
    • Myles Montgomery: 79 rushing yards and 71 receiving.
    • Defense & Special Teams: JSU went 3-for-15 on third downs, UCF blocked a field goal to keep things scoreless at halftime, and special teams delivered steady punting despite the earlier miss.

Final Thought:

It was far from perfect, but it had everything a wild college football night should. A two-hour lightning delay, missed kicks, penalties, and shaky moments, followed by clutch quarterback play, key defensive stops, and a walk-off touchdown.
